Chapter 3

High Bandwidth Self-Communication

"It's not what the vision is, it's what the vision does." – Alan Kay, The Walt Disney Company

Your subconscious is an obedient and able servant once it knows which direction you want to go. Self-communication is the process of directing your subconscious mind. You know you are self-communicating effectively when your actions are moving you closer to your desired outcome.

"High bandwidth" describes communication in which a large volume of information is transferred very rapidly. Some methods of self-communicating are far more effective than others. After reviewing the basic principles involved, the following four strategies will be explained:

  1. Visualization - Four exercises are presented for developing your imagination (mental snapshot, submodality, drawing, and ten minute visualization) to help you develop this skill.
  2. Using metaphors to communicate meaning both to others and to your subconscious at higher bandwidths.
  3. Full physiology affirmations that involve thinking about your desired outcome at moments when you have developed powerful physiologies.
  4. Employing alpha brain waves by thinking about your desired outcome in a state of relaxed alertness.

Self-communication is a two-way street. The above strategies sow the seeds, yet you must also nurture the ability to "tune-in" to intuitive guidance as it blossoms from your subconscious mind. Thus I conclude the chapter with a brief discussion of intuition.

Principles

The principles of self-communication are:

  1. There are two dimensions to self-communication: physical and mental.
  2. When you truly believe in the power of your subconscious, you won't hesitate to use high bandwidth self-communication techniques daily. You may even look forward to it.
  3. Give yourself a reason to use the untapped mental capacity of your subconscious.
  4. Your mind cannot focus on the opposite of an idea.
  5. Your subconscious continues to process or "incubate" issues even when you are not consciously thinking about them.
  6. The effectiveness of your self-communication is diminished to the extent it contradicts existing beliefs or behavior patterns that your subconscious mind believes are important to you. Your desired direction must be personally ecological.
  7. A picture in your mind is worth a thousand words as well.
